Art is not a one-way street. My overall program of research is designed to explore what shapes the interaction, or dialogue, between the viewer and the work of art.

Two Lines of Research
  • The intersection of the visual arts and developmental psychology, particularly in the area of aesthetic reasoning.
  • The overlap between moral and aesthetic reasoning with Dr. Liane Young.

In the Arts and Mind Lab my current projects explore both children’s and adults’ conceptions of insider and outsider art, street art, and abstract art looking specifically at the roles of intentionality and visual composition when we evaluate works of art. In the Morality Lab I examine the cognitive processes involved in both moral and aesthetic reasoning.
